Emergency orthodontic care at Earlwood Orthodontics — we’re here to help

At Earlwood Orthodontics, we define an emergency as any sudden change in your orthodontic appliances resulting from uncontrolled movement or breakage, such as:

  • Sore teethWe recommend taking a mild analgesic such as Nurofen or Panadol. The pain will reduce or ease after a few days.
  • Poking tie wire — Push the wire away with a cotton tip, pencil eraser or something similar. If it cannot be tucked away, cover it with a small piece of wax or sugarless chewing gum until you can visit us for an adjustment.
  • Poking wire — Cover it with wax or wet cotton and call us for an appointment.
  • Wire out of the tube — Try to slide the wire back into the tube with tweezers. Then, place a piece of wax over the area if uncomfortable. If the wire is sticking into your gums and the wax does not help, please call us for an appointment.
  • Rotated archwire — Slide the wire back around to the other side. If unsuccessful, place wax on the wire and call us to book an appointment.
  • Loose bracket — If the bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If it flips around the wire, you can use tweezers to reposition the bracket gently. If a band or bracket comes out of your mouth, place it in an envelope and bring it to your next visit.

Call Earlwood Orthodontics as soon as possible to schedule a repair visit. DO NOT CONNECT HEADGEAR OR ELASTICS TO A LOOSE BAND OR BRACKET.

  • Food stuck between your teeth or wire — Use dental flosses such as super floss, Colgate all-purpose floss or an interproximal (Christmas tree) brush to remove the stuck food.
  • Plate or retainer is lost or brokenIf you’ve lost or broken your retainer, call us to arrange a replacement or repair. Please note that fees may apply for replacements.
  • Lost elastic (o-ring) or tie-wireAn instance where a tooth may move out of position. In this case of an emergency for your braces, please call us for an appointment.
  • Soreness from braces — Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If necessary, take a pain reliever that you would use for a headache or similar discomfort.
  • Accident involving your teethIf you’re involved in an accident resulting in brace loss, call Earlwood Orthodontics for an appointment immediately.

If any of the above accidents happen to you and home remedy suggestions don’t help, call us — we can make time to see you and assess your condition. With a pre-organised appointment, we can address your requirements immediately. Even in the case of a scheduled regular appointment, call us immediately to notify us if you need an appliance repaired.
